Adelaide & Beyond: Beaches, Hills, City, Art & Wildlife

Adelaide is one of those cities that definitely has it all — from beaches and rolling vineyards to vibrant city streets with many lane ways, surreal art and Festivals, and even African wildlife safari parks just an hour away. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, South Australia’s capital makes it easy.

One minute you're standing in the Adelaide Hills overlooking the skyline… the next you're in the heart of the city. It’s compact, accessible and incredibly scenic. You can easily wake up by the beach, sip wine by lunchtime, explore a European-style village in the afternoon, wander vibrant laneways by evening — and go on safari the next morning. Within 45 minutes you can be surrounded by vineyards.

We spent time in McLaren Vale, one of South Australia’s most scenic wine regions.

Rolling vineyards meet wide open skies, and the cellar doors are beautifully designed and welcoming.

One standout visit was Chapel Hill Winery — a stunning hilltop winery with panoramic vineyard views and a relaxed, premium feel.

It’s the kind of place where you slow down, sit a little longer, and truly enjoy the moment. Chapel Hill Wine – Chapel Hill Wine

Wine regions here aren’t just about wine.

The striking d'Arenberg Cube is a bold architectural statement surrounded by vineyards — home to a Salvador Dalí exhibition. Whilst there we also visited a Dr. Suess art exhibition - I used to love reading these books to the kids and they enjoyed the art to and brought back memories for them.

On the way toward wine country, a stop in Hahndorf is a must.

Quaint streets, artisan shops and German-inspired bakeries make it feel like you’ve stepped into Europe — without leaving South Australia. Hahndorf originated in 1839, when Lutheran migrants fleeing religious persecution in Prussia. The custom landscape and German food and traditions from German residents make this town unique. From Chocolates to pastries to Chicken schnitzel, beer and Gin there is a lot to choose from to enjoy.

Back in the City Centre, Rundell Mall has more than just the biggest and best brands, this is where you will also discover local boutiques, food favourites, vibrant arcades, hidden laneways and so much more. Adelaide’s charm shows up through all of its laneways and café scene.

The Adelaide Central Market has over 70 food shops. I suggest going here on your 1st or 2nd day into Adelaide and finding some amazing local meats, Vegetables, fruit and Pastries. Even just for a look OR a coffee and pastry, this place is an array of traders with amazing colours, foods, nuts and more. They are only open until 5.30pm Mon-Thu so go Fridays when they are open from 7am to 9pm or on Saturdays 7am - 3pm.

Then comes the wow factor!

Just an hour from the city, Monarto Safari Park delivers an authentic safari-style experience.  Wandering across open plains. Elephants exploring their habitat. African wild dogs, bison and oryx — all part of incredible conservation programs working to protect endangered species.

And if you really want to elevate it — stay overnight at the Monarto Safari lodge inside the park.

I would suggest staying 2 nights rather than 1 to really enjoy the resort and the Park. Book a night safari on your arrival, do the park the next day and then the day of departure do the Dawn Safari. Be sure to have a Waterhole View Room for balcony wildlife viewing and the sunsets/sunrises — unforgettable.!

.If you want a beach escape, wine region with world-class cellar doors, Culture and heritage, art and architecture, shopping and Cafe's and even a touch of Africa - without going there then Adelaide definitely has it all.

And that’s why I will keep recommending it!
